Funding Opportunities

American Osteopathic Association Grant Opportunities for DOs, MDs and PhDs – The AOA provides funding opportunities for researchers conducting 18- or 24-month projects rooted in osteopathic principles and practice. The grants support five research focus areas:  Chronic Diseases & Conditions; Musculoskeletal Injuries & Prevention; Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment; Osteopathic Philosophy; Pain Management.

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Treatment on the Prevention and Management of Musculoskeletal Injuries (OMM/OMT)

Submission Deadline: January 31, 2020:  Proposals in response to this RFA should improve the scientific basis of the mechanics and impact of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) on the prevention and management of musculoskeletal injuries through clinical, in vitro, or basic science research.

Acute/Chronic Pain Management Grant (ACPM)

Submission Deadline: January 31, 2020:  Proposals in response to this RFA should explore the osteopathic approaches to acute and chronic pain management with an emphasis on treatments and patient outcomes. The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as “ an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage , or described in terms of such damage.” Acute pain is the immediate and ongoing response of the body to noxious stimuli that lasts up to twelve weeks. Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists longer than 12 weeks. While there may be physiologic differences between the nature of acute and chronic pain it is a basic premise of this grant that pain inflicts physical, emotional, psychosocial and spiritual suffering the relief of which is a fundamental goal and obligation of the osteopathic profession.

New Investigator Grant Program:

Submission Deadline: January 31, 2020:  The objective of the New Investigator Grant Program is to advance scientific training for researchers who have completed a terminal research degree or postgraduate clinical training, whichever came later, within the past 10 years.

Osteopathic Medical Students Research Program:

Submission Deadline: January 31, 2020:  This program is designed as a mechanism for supporting the research training of the applicant and will enable the applicant to conduct a basic science, clinical, or health services research project that will make a significant contribution to osteopathic medicine. Additionally, this program seeks to introduce medical students to the osteopathic research community and encourage them to implement research throughout their career.  The program involves the completion of a grant proposal under the direction of a mentor. The mentor should be an active investigator in the area of the proposed research and be committed both to the career development of the applicant and to the direct supervision of the applicant’s research. Both the mentor and the applicant must accept responsibility for the conduct of the project and the reporting of the scientific results. A portion of the research-training program may be conducted at an institution other than the sponsoringinstitution. The sponsoring institution, however, must have obtained the services of a consultant who will offer on-site supervision of that portion of the grant proposal, which is not completed at the sponsoring institution.

Kaplan Medical Medical Education and Innovation Through Research – Kaplan Medical’s MEITR program was created to promote education and innovation through research focused on medical education as part of a Kaplan institutional partnership. Grant applications are due January 15, 2020 for full consideration.

National Institutes of Health – NIH offers funding for many types of grants, contracts, and even programs that help repay loans for researchers.
