Inspiring Voices: Women in Medicine Panel at Burrell College

Women in Medicine Panel at Burrell College

Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine hosted a panel of women physicians and faculty members to celebrate Women in Medicine Month. The panel included: Dr. Doris Newman, DO, FAAO, Dr. Arleen Lally, DO, Dr. Angelica Oviedo, MD, Dr. Sheeba Tano, DO, Dr. Mary Lacaze, MD, Dr. Adrienne Kania, DO, FAAO, and Dr. Giselle Irio, DO.

Dr. Newman highlighted the importance of the panel as a way to inspire our student doctors. “This event is important because it demonstrates to our female students that women hold leadership positions in medicine,” said Dr. Newman. “It helps our female students understand women in different specialties in medicine and helps guide them in their journey in medicine,” she added. The panel was part of a bigger initiative throughout the month that included various programs and exhibits. One of those exhibits was “Rise, Serve, Lead! America’s Women Physicians” exhibit, produced by the National Library of Medicine.

This inspiring exhibit, hosted at the college, showcased the remarkable contributions of women who have not only shaped the healthcare industry but also paved the way for future generations of women physicians. Burrell also hosted a keynote presentation from Dr. Karen Nichols, a prominent osteopathic leader and author, who addressed the significance of leadership in the medical field. Speaking to students, Dr. Nichols emphasized, “Be the best doctor that you can be.” She expressed her pride in seeing an exhibit that demonstrates the legacy of women who have excelled in healthcare and urged students to embody that same spirit in their medical careers. Dr. Nichols’ message underscored the importance of striving for excellence, leadership, and breaking barriers in the field of medicine.
