Student Doctor Ashley Maczka Matches Into Mission-Focused Residency

Ashley Maczka

Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine fourth-year student doctor Ashley Maczka matched into the University of New Mexico’s internal medicine residency program, aligning with Burrell’s mission to train physicians for underserved communities.

“Matching in New Mexico meant so much to me,” Ms. Maczka said. “Being at the Four Corners Regional Academic site in Gallup solidified my interest in pursuing a career in rural, Native American health, and I am so grateful to continue towards that goal at the University of New Mexico.”

Ashley developed an interest in serving rural communities during her undergraduate studies when she interned with the Indian Health Service Office of Epidemiology. She hopes to continue working with Native American populations during and after her residency.

“The physician shortage throughout the country is alarming, especially in rural areas,” Ms. Maczka said. “My hopes are to serve those within rural New Mexico both during my training and after. I hope to return to Gallup after my training and continue to serve the community that first taught me.”

Ashley will begin her residency this summer. Her match reflects Burrell College’s mission to train physicians who will address healthcare shortages in the Southwest. She looks forward to applying her skills where they are needed most.
