Dr. Angelica Oviedo, associate professor of pathology at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, has received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, presented by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation.

The national award honors medical faculty who exemplifies compassionate, patient-centered care and serve as role models for future physicians. Each year, the foundation recognizes one faculty member and one graduating student from participating institutions. Awardees are also inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, a national organization celebrating clinicians who lead with empathy and integrity.

Dr. Oviedo was selected by her peers and students for her mentorship, dedication to medical education, and commitment to humanistic care in both the classroom and the clinic.

Known for her supportive teaching style and emphasis on whole-person care, Dr. Oviedo said she believes humanism is an essential part of pathology and medical education.

“Students are always watching and learning—not just from what we say, but from how we treat others,” she said. “If I can help them see the importance of empathy in action, then I’ve done my job.”

The Gold Foundation established the award to promote the idea that clinical excellence must be grounded in compassion. Dr. Oviedo now joins a distinguished group of educators and physicians across the country who are shaping the future of humanistic medicine.
