Burrell College Student Physician Named National Student Doctor of the Year

Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine student physician Anamaria Ancheta has been named the National Student Doctor of the Year by the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.

The national honor recognizes a student who demonstrates outstanding leadership, service, professionalism and commitment to the osteopathic profession. Ancheta was selected from a competitive pool of nominees representing colleges of osteopathic medicine across the country.

Selection committee members cited the consistency and breadth of Ancheta’s involvement throughout medical school, noting the wide-reaching impact of her work and her strong commitment to service. They also highlighted her patient advocacy efforts and her connection to the communities she serves.

“I am forever grateful for my education as an osteopathic medical student, which has taught me the healing powers of our hands,” said student physician Anamaria Ancheta. “This is the foundation that I carry forward as I work to expand access to healthcare as a future osteopathic physician.”

College leaders said the recognition reflects both Ancheta’s individual accomplishments and the institution’s mission to train physicians dedicated to serving underserved communities.

“This national recognition speaks to Anamaria’s dedication to patient care, leadership and service,” said John Hummer, President and CEO of Burrell College. “She represents the values of osteopathic medicine and the mission of our institution.”

Ancheta was formally recognized at the AACOM Educating Leaders Conference, held April 22–24 in Las Vegas.

“I am extremely grateful to be an osteopathic medical student and train in the same area where my grandparents and mother once worked as agricultural workers,” said Ancheta. “It is truly the seeds they planted that have helped me grow.”

The award is presented annually to a student who exemplifies the principles of osteopathic medicine and demonstrates a commitment to improving the health of patients and communities.
