BCOM’s Student Osteopathic Medical Association Mentors Pre-Med Students

The BCOM chapter of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) held two events in December encouraging area college students to attend medical school. At BCOM’s first Osteopathic Night Out, pre-med students from NMSU’s newly-established Pre-SOMA Club and UTEP’s Pre-Health Club explored BCOM’s simulation and OMM lab and engaged in a Q&A session with current medical school students. The event was organized by BCOM student Kayla Ivey to help meet the school’s mission of recruiting more local students.

BCOM SOMA also hosted their first DO for a Day program, organized by student Emily Hanka. A total of 13 pre-med students attended from UTEP, NMSU, and Colorado State University. Each was paired with a first year medical student to get an in-depth look at what it’s really like to attend medical school. They also met with admissions representatives, toured the campus, and attended lectures led by BCOM’s faculty.

Both events were featured by the National SOMA organization at facebook.com/NationalSOMA.
