BCOM students, faculty, and staff continue to show their commitment to the local community through outreach events like these that were held all over Las Cruces in October and November.
Over 60 community members showed up to the second annual Fall Festival hosted by the BCOM Pediatrics Club in conjunction with the Health and Wellness Club and the NMSU Pre-Medicine Club. In addition to a Mini Med School, guests at the Fall Festival event were treated to face-painting, games, hot cocoa and cider, and an exciting demonstration by the NMSU Physics Club.
The American Osteopathic College of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation hosted a booth at the Fall Festival where they let community members and fellow students know about their organization and their plans for the upcoming academic year.
The Dermatology Club also got in on the Fall Festival fun by educating guests about skin cancer and proper techniques for sun protection.
The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) hosted a Sugar Skull Paint Night open to the public in celebration of Dia de Los Muertos. They also hosted a Breakfast and Bake Sale, raising over $200 for SNMA and the Native American Explorers Program.
The Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) and Student Affairs hosted DO for a Day, an outreach and pathway effort that reaches out to students who are interested in becoming physicians by letting them experience a day in the life of an osteopathic medical student. Interested students from Albuquerque, El Paso, Las Cruces and the surrounding region made the trip to BCOM to learn more about osteopathic medicine and the medical school.
The Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) participated in a yard cleanup project hosted by the East Mesa Police Station. Students helped clean three yards throughout the community to help preserve and promote a cleaner Las Cruces.
The American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians (ACOP) club participated in the Aprendamos Intervention Team Center’s Trunk or Treat event. The 20 medical students gave out candy and played games with the children, including a life-sized Operation game!
COMPASS presented to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at Vista Middle School on pill overdose. The students rotated in groups of 30 for 30 minutes each and learned about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs. COMPASS is a community outreach organization that seeks to empower the communities in Las Cruces and the surrounding region through education, awareness, self-sufficiency, and unity.
The Health and Wellness Club joined COMPASS at Vista Middle School to tackle over the counter and prescription drug abuse by educating students during a community health fair.
In the Spirit of Halloween, BCOMers brought some fun to campus by dressing up in costume. Congratulations to Michael Arias, Joel Stjernholm, Mario Soliman, and Fadi Rizk for winning the costume contest in the categories of medical, creative, and scary.
The BCOM Student Government Association (SGA) hosted a Trick or Treat event for the community. Students decorated the building, handed out candy, and played games with community members of all ages.
