Building BCOM Connections

BCOM Dean Don N. Peska, DO; UTEP Director of the Medical Professions Institute Dr. Gail Arnold; UTEP President Dr. Diana Natalicio; BCOM President John L. Hummer; and UTEP College of Sciences Dean Dr. Robert A. Kirken met to explore mutually beneficial initiatives to enhance the missions of both UTEP and BCOM. Exciting future ahead!

BCOM Chief of Surgery, Adela Lente, MD; Director of Simulation, Sam Gutierrez (below, left); and Assistant V.P. for Multicultural Inclusion, Justin McHorse (above, far right), gave a presentation to 19 Native American students at Las Cruces High School.

The purpose of the presentation was to recruit students for BCOM’s Native American Medical Explorer Program, a pathway initiative designed to encourage, mentor and prepare high school students for careers in the allied health fields and ultimately medicine.

Many thanks to Joseph Teran, LCHS STEM Academy Counselor, and Irene Pacheco, LCHS HHS (Health & Human Services) Academy Counselor, for organizing the presentation and student gathering.

BCOM student Harris Ahmed (far left), who serves as National Parliamentarian and Vice President Elect for the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA), attended the annual meeting of the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) in Chicago where he presented concerns from students across the nation, as well as various standard recommendations/revisions on topics including clinical rotations and sexual harassment reporting.

Local high school students from BCOM’s Medical Explorers Program gathered in the BCOM lobby for a photo with the program’s founder Dr. Richard Selinfreund (center). Students involved in the program receive mentoring on careers in medicine and health and get to participate in facility site visits and hands-on medical training.
