Burrell Medical Students Inspire at Family Physicians Reception

Two Burrell students recently presented at the New Mexico Academy of Family Physicians 19th Annual Med Student Reception in Albuquerque.

Second year student doctors, Ali Tajkarimi and Anamaria Ancheta delivered presentations about their mentors, Michael Frederich, MD and Karen Vaillant, MD, ABFM. Their presentations were about both of their experiences in family medicine.

“It was enlightening to learn about the diverse roles within family medicine, from working in the emergency room, to owning a private practice, serving in a VA hospital, or working in an outpatient setting,” said Mr. Tajkarimi. “Each doctor shared positive experiences, which was truly inspiring as I consider my future in this field,” he added.

About 40 Burrell students attended the Med Student Reception. Ms. Ancheta interviewed and presented about her mentor, Dr. Vaillant.

“It was an incredible opportunity to interview and share Dr. Valliant’s journey in medicine, especially focusing on the large impact she has in the rural communities of New Mexico,” said Ms. Ancheta. “Her impact on increasing access to healthcare and forming deep bonds with the community touched my heart as I witnessed my own family from Anthony, New Mexico having to travel far distances to receive specialty healthcare services,” Ms. Ancheta added.

The event also provided an excellent opportunity for networking and professional development for aspiring family physicians. Dr. Vaillant also attended the event and was proud to see Burrell so well represented.

“It was the best Medical Student Reception that I have ever attended, thanks to our great students – we are so proud of them,” said Dr. Vaillant. “Their presentations showcased our focus on family medicine and how we align our initiatives to mission medicine and border health,” Dr. Vaillant added.
