Burrell College Expert Tips From Your Student D.O.c: Signs of Depression

Student Doctor Woo Kwon sits down with Sydney Alvarez

In this insightful video from Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine’s series, “Expert Tips From Your Student Doc,” student doctor Woo Kwon offers valuable guidance on recognizing signs of depression. Depression, as Woo explains, is a prevalent yet serious mental health condition that significantly impacts how a person thinks, feels, and behaves.

Woo Kwon discusses three primary signs to watch for when identifying potential depression in oneself or others:

  1. Behavior Changes: A shift in sleep or eating patterns can be an early indicator. Depressed individuals may find themselves sleeping more or less than usual, along with noticeable changes in appetite. These disruptions often lead to chronic fatigue and a noticeable decrease in energy levels.
  2. Mood Changes: Depression frequently affects concentration, making tasks at school or work challenging. Individuals may find themselves more easily frustrated, losing interest in hobbies, or lacking motivation for daily routines.
  3. Depressive Thoughts and Feelings: Persistent negative emotions, such as guilt, worthlessness, anxiety, or sadness, are common. Woo encourages those noticing multiple signs to seek support from a counselor, therapist, or doctor. Support from family and friends and professional guidance is crucial.

With two campuses in Las Cruces, NM, and Melbourne, FL, Burrell College continues to support mental health awareness by highlighting this critical information.
