SANTA FE, N.M. — On January 29, 2024, Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine students, faculty, and alumni joined physicians from across New Mexico at the state Capitol for White Coat Day.

Dressed in their white coats, the group made a visual impact as they entered both chambers of the Roundhouse, drawing attention from lawmakers. They met with legislators to address the state’s physician shortage and discuss key issues like medical malpractice reform, removing the gross receipt tax from medical practices, and improving reimbursement rates.

Dr. Scott Cyrus, chair of clinical medicine at Burrell College, expressed pride in the group’s efforts.

“As a Burrell College faculty member, it makes me proud to join our students at the Roundhouse to address our legislators. Their stories of medical education debt and a desire to stay in the state for residency and independent practice resonated with lawmakers,” said Dr. Cyrus. “I want to thank all the students and faculty who took their time to serve the people of New Mexico and represent Burrell.”

Student doctor Anamaria Ancheta was among the group representing Burrell College at White Coat Day.

“It was a great opportunity to meet with legislators and advocate for expanding the New Mexico Health Professionals Loan Forgiveness Program while also highlighting the importance of osteopathic medicine,” said Anamaria Ancheta.
