MELBOURNE, Fla. – Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine ceremonially opened its Florida campus on Jan. 29, 2025, with “Burrell College Unveiled: A Welcome Gala.” The event drew about 300 attendees, including business and community leaders, elected officials, and medical professionals, to mark the milestone expansion. The gala served as an opportunity to welcome the public, as well as business and community leaders, to learn more about the College and its mission.
Burrell College officially accepted its first class of 108 students in July 2024, marking the beginning of its impact on medical education in Florida.
Guests toured Burrell College’s state-of-the-art facility, exploring the gross anatomy and anatomical sciences lab, the high-fidelity simulation lab, and the osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) lab. Faculty and students demonstrated the institution’s hands-on approach to medical training.
John Hummer, president of Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, said the event underscored the College’s commitment to addressing physician shortages, particularly in underserved communities. “Our new Florida campus will help train the next generation of osteopathic physicians who will serve with excellence and compassion,” he said.
Denise Gonzales, M.D., chair of the Board of Trustees at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, highlighted the College’s mission. “Burrell College is dedicated to increasing access to quality healthcare by educating future physicians,” she said. “This campus represents another step forward in that mission, and we are thrilled to see it come to life here in Melbourne.”
The event also showcased Burrell College’s partnership with the Florida Institute of Technology. John Nicklow, Ph.D., president of Florida Tech, welcomed the collaboration. “The synergy between our institutions will create incredible opportunities for research, education, and the advancement of healthcare in the region,” he said.
Mayor Paul Alfrey of Melbourne emphasized the impact of Burrell College’s presence. “This is an exciting moment for Melbourne. The addition of Burrell College strengthens our reputation as a hub for innovation and education. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this institution will have on our community,” he said.
Students also shared their excitement about the new campus. First-year student doctor Laura Francis praised the facility’s resources. “I feel so fortunate to be part of a program that emphasizes hands-on learning and patient-centered care,” she said.
First-year student doctor Michael Yingst highlighted the supportive learning environment. “The sense of community here is amazing. The support from faculty, leadership, and our peers makes this an ideal place to grow as future physicians,” he said.
The Welcome Gala showcased Burrell College’s dedication to medical education and healthcare in Florida. With its innovative curriculum, top-tier faculty, and commitment to serving communities in need, the College aims to shape the future of osteopathic medicine for years to come.
