A New Era Begins: Burrell College of Health Sciences Officially Launches

Burrell College has reached a defining milestone in its evolution, officially becoming Burrell College of Health Sciences in June 2026. The transition reflects the institution’s continued growth and its expanding role in educating the next generation of healthcare professionals.

The new name signals a broader vision, one that extends beyond osteopathic medicine to encompass a wider range of academic programs designed to meet the needs of an evolving healthcare landscape. While the name has changed, the mission remains the same: preparing compassionate, skilled health professionals who make a meaningful impact in the communities they serve.

As part of this transition, Burrell College is now organized into two schools:

  • School of Osteopathic Medicine (BCSOM)
  • School of Health Professions (BCSHP)

“This transition reflects both who we are today and the future we are intentionally building,” said John Hummer, President of Burrell College. “Burrell College has always been defined by purpose and forward momentum, preparing healthcare professionals who make a meaningful difference for patients and the communities they serve. Our growth is not a departure from our mission; it is a natural extension of it.”

For students, the transition represents a moment of progress and possibility. The expanded structure creates new opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, program development, and community engagement.

“I see this as opening more doors,” said Lavin Lahiji, a Burrell College student physician. “A health sciences structure creates room for new programs and new partnerships, and it’s exciting to think about what that could mean for students now and in the future.”

At the governance level, the transition has been guided with a focus on sustainability, academic excellence, and long-term impact.

“This transition represents thoughtful governance and long-term stewardship,” said Denise Gonzales, MD, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “The Board is committed to ensuring that Burrell College continues to grow in a way that strengthens academic quality, financial sustainability, and community impact. This next chapter positions our institution for enduring success while remaining grounded in its founding mission.”

The rebrand and structural evolution were developed through a collaborative process involving voices from across the institution, ensuring the outcome reflects the Burrell College community as a whole.

“This evolution is about clarity, alignment, and shared ownership,” said Sidney Alvarez, Associate Vice President of Marketing & Communications. “As our programs expand, it’s important that our name and structure accurately reflect the full scope of who we are today. This branding effort was shaped by a working group that included our students, alumni, faculty, and staff, ensuring the outcome reflects the voices of our community. We’ve been intentional about building an identity that strengthens recognition, supports long-term growth, and honors the trust placed in Burrell College.”

With this transition now complete, Burrell College of Health Sciences is positioned to build on its foundation while continuing to expand programs, partnerships, and opportunities that serve both students and the communities they will impact.
