Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine hosted its ninth annual Founder’s Day celebration this month, honoring the founding of the college and recognizing the faculty and staff who continue to bring its mission and vision to life.
Celebrations took place across both campuses—Las Cruces, NM, and Melbourne, FL—with barbecues, staff recognition awards, and moments of reflection shared among colleagues.
“Today is our ninth celebration that we always hold at the end of the academic year, and we call it Founder’s Day,” said Burrell College President John Hummer, MHA. “It’s a day that we come together to commemorate the founding of the college and to thank all the team members who help make it a reality.”
As the college continues to grow, Founder’s Day has become a meaningful tradition to spotlight the individuals behind Burrell’s student-centered mission.
Assistant Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professor of Immunology Dr. Gabor Szalai emphasized the collective spirit behind the event:
“I think this is a concerted effort of all parties involved. Today, we’re just having a good time, sharing good food and fun moments we’ve had with the school.”
One key part of the celebration is the Staff Council Awards, designed to recognize individuals who have gone above and beyond throughout the year.
“The Staff Council Awards are our way of showing appreciation to team members who’ve made a consistent impact,” said Associate Registrar Delano Martinez. “We wanted to say thank you by presenting them with an award.”
Among the honorees was Vanessa Richardson, M.Ed., Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, who received the 2025 Bear Collaboration and Mission-Focused Award.
“I feel so humbled and grateful to come to work here every day,” Richardson said. “I love my department, my team, and I just love being here.”
From academic leadership to support services, every corner of Burrell College contributes to a shared purpose: preparing students to serve, lead, and thrive in the medical field. Founder’s Day serves as a heartfelt reminder that Burrell’s mission is made possible by the people behind it.
