Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine is excited to announce a $1.5 million grant from the JF Maddox Foundation to improve healthcare in Lea County, New Mexico. This funding will support the development and implementation of a new family medicine residency program at Nor-Lea Hospital District and Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital. The new residency program has received “Initial Accreditation” by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).  The program will consist of a total of 6 accredited family medicine residents.

“Healthy communities are the bedrock of well-being,” said Shawn Bassham, Executive Director of the Coalition for Osteopathic Excellence (COE). “This partnership is a tremendous opportunity to reduce healthcare disparities and strengthen our local medical workforce.”

GME programs are critical in underserved areas, filling healthcare gaps and boosting the local economy. Many medical residents often stay and practice in the communities where they train, creating lasting impact.

“The JF Maddox Foundation is excited for the opportunity to widen our net when it comes to recruiting high-quality practitioners to Lea County. Burrell’s experience in the region combined with Nor-Lea and Covenant’s resources and expertise will surely be a great benefit to healthcare in Lea County,” said Mayra Lovas, Vice President Grants, JF Maddox Foundation.

Dr. Oliver Hayes, DO, MPH, and Burrell’s Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education, expressed his enthusiasm: “I am immensely proud of our association with the Maddox Foundation and look forward to residents beginning their training in Lea County.”

David Shaw, CEO of Nor-Lea Hospital District, emphasized the grant’s significance: “This funding gives our hospitals the resources to better serve our community, fostering economic and social well-being through education and healthcare.”

With Burrell College’s support, this initiative will ensure improved healthcare access and a sustainable medical workforce, paving the way for a healthier, more resilient Lea County.
