Joshua J Baca Memorial – Four Corners Scholarship
“Be Like Joshua”
Growing up in the 90’s there was a Gatorade commercial based on Michael Jordan with the catchphrase “Be like Mike”. The phrase captured the universal desire to aspire to greatness and emulate someone admired for their talent, dedication and accomplishments.
Josh was a mentor to many people; he started at a young age dedicating his free time volunteering to better his community. He coached and mentored a local football team. Be a mentor, like Josh. Years later he started a Real Estate Appraisal business, not knowing if it would be successful, he took the leap. He ran his business successfully for over 20 years. Take chances and take the leap to be great, like Josh. Every Thanksgiving, Josh would make sack lunches and feed the homeless in his community. Be empathetic and give back, like Josh.
At age 44, Josh was diagnosed with stage IV Colorectal Cancer and fought hard for 18 months. He lived every one of those days to the fullest. Make everyday count, like Josh. Josh made this world a better place to live throughout his life through his kind actions, positivity, selfless nature and spirit. Change the world for the better, like Josh.

Criteria

| Eligibility Criteria | Must be in good standing academically Must legal resident of NM, AZ, UT or CO (aka Four Corners Region) Student demonstrates financial need by having a Student Aid Index of -450 to -1500 as calculated by data submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. |
| Additional Award Considerations | Exhibit further need or circumstances limiting ability to pursue medical degree Priority may be given to single parents; Priority may be given to OMSII students who received the scholarship as OMSI students. |
| Required Submissions | Burrell Scholarship application Short essay describing any obstacles or challenges the student has faced pursuing medical school entrance and/or study. |
