The BCOM Sports Medicine Club joined forces with NMSU’s Student Association of Diabetics and Nutrition for the second annual Tachycardic Fun Run. The charitable event ended up raising $1,450, 317 canned goods/food items, 21 toiletry items, and five cases of water. All donations went to Mesilla Valley Community of Hope, a service center that addresses poverty and homelessness in Las Cruces and Dona Ana County.
The organizers built upon the 2017 event by adding a team component to the race and awarding prizes for accomplishments beyond finishing first, like donating the most canned goods and team spirit. This year, informational booths were also included in the event. Southwest Sport & Spine hosted a sports medicine table staffed with athletic trainers and physical therapists who worked with several BCOM first year medical students on stretches and patient evaluation techniques.
The NMSU SAND Club and Natural Grocers both had nutrition tables, and the BCOM dermatology, surgery, and compass clubs held booths as well. Other students took samples from potential bone marrow donors.
“We increased our community participation from last year and I was super excited about all the help we had from other organizations,” said BCOM second year medical student Robyn Marks. “We hope that in the next years, it’ll keep growing!”
