Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine Donation to NMSU Foundation Reaches $1,968,090

The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine has announced its annual donation of $412,000 to the NMSU Foundation. Since its first academic year in 2016, the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine has donated $1,968,090 to the NMSU Foundation for the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Endowed & Current Use Scholarship Fund.

“Our motto, and mission, start with Para la Gente. Y el Futuro. For the People. For the Future. We demonstrate this in so many ways,” states John Hummer, President, Burrell College. Our annual donation to the NMSU Foundation is central to our mission and demonstrates a tangible commitment to growing the future physician workforce. We value our relationship with NMSU and are excited about the collaborative impact we are making within the state of New Mexico.”

This is the sixth annual gift to NMSU, as part of a continuous partnership between the two institutions. The impending donation has been announced by Burrell College’s President John L. Hummer and Dean Bill Pieratt, DO. It will be received by NMSU Chancellor Dr. Dan Arvizu, and Derek Dictson, President of the NMSU Foundation in mid-July, 2022.

“The NMSU Foundation is grateful to have this connection with the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, whose gifts to NMSU are made with the intent to provide our students a pathway to medical school,” said Derek Dictson, President, NMSU Foundation. “By establishing a donation that our students can count on from year to year, Burrell College can advance its mission of providing osteopathic medical education, research and support for clinical service to the community.”

The purpose of the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Endowed & Current Use Scholarship Fund is for New Mexico State University to attract and recruit New Mexico students who desire to become future physicians. Recipients, beginning their freshman year at NMSU, must be enrolled in the Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program (OMPP) and meet the program requirements.

“From its very founding, the relationship between the Burrell College and NMSU was designed to help students who could then go on to help underserved communities across the region,” said NMSU Chancellor Dan Arvizu, Ph.D. “This financial support from the Burrell College shows the strength of our relationship and will help encourage students to pursue important careers as health care professionals and go on to become invaluable resources for our rural and underserved communities.”

During their time at NMSU, students in the OMPP program receive the benefits of education and career guidance from both NMSU and Burrell College. Undergraduates work with a mentor who assists them with their transition to medical school. OMPP students learn from healthcare professionals through seminars, research opportunities, and internships. They are also allowed to participate in a Living Learning Community where they engage in programming relevant to the aspirational physicians.

To date, there have been three students who have matriculated into Burrell College by way of the OMPP Program. To learn more about the program, click here: OMMP PROGRAM.
