Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine to Host Exhibition “Rise, Serve, Lead! America’s Women Physicians”

What: “Rise, Serve, Lead! America’s Women Physicians” produced by the National Library of Medicine. The exhibit will feature historical facts and activities focusing on women physicians.

Why: To highlight women physicians in the U.S. who made a difference through their medical work, activism, administrative service and mentorship.

(Las Cruces, NM) – On August 19th- September 27th, Burrell will be hosting “Rise, Serve, Lead! America’s Women Physicians” produced by the National Library of Medicine. During the exhibit, the Burrell library will be hosting activities regarding women physicians and their history. The exhibit will feature historical facts about pioneering women physicians such as Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to become a physician in the United States.

“Women have always been at the heart of healing, nurturing communities, and advancing medical knowledge. Their journey into the world of physicians is not one of gaining entry but of claiming a rightful place that has been earned through generations of resilience, expertise, and compassion,” said Trey Lemley, Director of Library at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Exhibit Schedule:

August 19th – September 13th

– “Rise, Serve, Lead! America’s Women Physicians” exhibit will be showcased at the Burrell Library. Six graphic banners will be displayed featuring different women physicians and their impact in the field.

August 30th

– Dr. Karen Nichols, author of “Physician Leadership: The 11 Skills Every Doctor Needs to be an Effective Leader,” will deliver a speech to Burrell students.

September 13th

-A screening of “The Feminine Touch,” a PBS documentary highlighting the remarkable history of women in osteopathic medicine, will be shown at Burrell’s Las Cruces campus.

September 27th

-A panel discussion will be hosted by Burrell’s women faculty physicians and alumni. It will be located on Burrell’s Las Cruces campus. Dr. Adrienne Kania, Dr. Mary Lacaze,

Dr. Doris Newman, Dr. Sheeba Tano and recent Burrell alumna Dr. Giselle Irio are scheduled to attend.

August 19th – September 27th

-Burrell students will be collecting items throughout the event to donate for the charity organization La Casa, a charity organization dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence.
