Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine Receives Diversity 2024 Higher Education Excellence Award Marking Third Consecutive Year For This Honor

(Las Cruces, NM) – The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine is proud to announce that it has been honored with the 2024 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine. This marks the third consecutive year that the College has received this prestigious recognition, highlighting its unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and diverse environment within the health professions.

Out of the 42 accredited osteopathic (DO) medical schools and 158 accredited allopathic (MD) medical schools, for a total of 200 medical schools in the United States, Burrell College is one of only 27 medical schools to receive the 2024 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award.

“We are incredibly honored to be recognized once again for our dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our medical school,” said John Hummer, President of Burrell College. “Recognizing we have more work to do, this award reinforces our mission to diversify the physician workforce and remain committed to improving healthcare access and outcomes in underserved communities.”

The HEED Award is a national honor awarded to U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. Burrell College continues to prioritize diversity as a core value, ensuring that the next generation of healthcare professionals reflects the communities they serve.

Erica Hughey, Chief Diversity Officer at Burrell College, emphasized the College’s commitment to inclusive excellence: “We are deeply honored to be among such a select group of institutions receiving this prestigious award. This recognition reflects the dedication of our students, faculty, and staff to nurturing a more equitable and inclusive learning and working environment that cultivates an enriching campus culture for all.”

As a recipient of the annual Health Professions HEED Award, a national honor recognizing U.S. health colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding

commitment to diversity and inclusion. The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine will be featured in the November/December 2024 issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine.

“This award highlights the collaborative efforts of our entire community to create a learning environment that not only embraces diversity but celebrates it. We are preparing the next generation of physicians to serve diverse patient populations with cultural competence and empathy,” concluded Burrell’s Dean & Chief Academic Officer and Executive Vice President of Academic Services, William Pieratt, DO, FACP.
