At Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, students are trained to become Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), entering the medical field with a patient-centered and holistic approach. Graduates are fully licensed physicians, equipped to practice medicine across all specialties and settings, alongside their allopathic counterparts (MDs).
“A DO is a fully licensed physician who has the ability to practice medicine in all scopes of training alongside our MDs and is able to diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and deliver babies,” explained Sheeba Tano, DO, Assistant Professor of Preclinical Medicine, Medical Oncology, Burrell College Of Osteopathic Medicine.
Holistic and Hands-On Training
One of the hallmarks of osteopathic medicine is its emphasis on osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT), a hands-on technique that complements traditional medical care. At Burrell, students receive extensive training in OMT, learning to assess and treat patients using physical manipulation to promote healing and restore function.
This approach allows DOs to focus on the root causes of illnesses rather than relying solely on medication. Students are also trained to consider lifestyle factors and external influences that impact health, emphasizing preventative care and whole-patient wellness.
A Unique Approach to Medicine
The philosophy behind osteopathic medicine appeals to those who prioritize holistic care and preventative strategies. “If you’re interested in whole patient care, if you’re interested in preventative medicine, and if that type of caring appeals to you, then I strongly encourage you to take a look at what osteopathic medicine is all about,” Dr. Tano said.
Burrell College fosters this mindset by integrating these principles into every aspect of its curriculum, preparing future physicians to excel in modern healthcare environments where a comprehensive approach is increasingly valued.
Serving Communities Nationwide
DOs play a critical role in addressing healthcare needs, especially in underserved areas. By emphasizing patient-centered care and equipping students with skills in OMT and preventative medicine, Burrell College graduates are well-positioned to make a meaningful impact in diverse communities.
