Burrell College Simulation Department Prepares Students for Real-World Medical Practice

Art Guzman, NR-P, I/C, BAS, Simulation Lab

The Simulation Department at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine bridges classroom learning and clinical practice, offering students hands-on training with lifelike mannequins and task trainers. The department equips students with the skills and confidence required for high-pressure medical environments.

“The mannequins are capable of producing lifelike scenarios in a controlled environment, so students have an opportunity to stop, pause, and learn,” said Art Guzman Jr., NR-P, I/C, BAS, director of clinical and experimental simulation at Burrell College.

Comprehensive Training Through Simulations

The simulations range from basic procedures to complex scenarios, such as childbirth, providing students with a safe, supervised setting to enhance clinical skills and decision-making. These exercises build a strong foundation for future hospital rotations.

In addition to high-fidelity mannequins, the department offers task trainers for practicing specific procedures, including airway management, CPR, and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). “Students can use task trainers to practice just that,” Guzman said.

Preparing for Field Rotations

The department’s primary goal is to prepare students for clinical rotations and their medical careers. “Our mission is to have students prepared to go into their field rotations as they move forward in their careers,” Guzman said.

By simulating real-world medical scenarios, the department ensures students are ready to excel in healthcare. These educational tools refine technical abilities and build the confidence necessary for success in the dynamic world of medicine.
