This July, Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine will welcome its newest class of student doctors to the Florida campus, marking a significant step forward in the College’s ongoing expansion and commitment to addressing healthcare needs across the region.

While anticipation builds for the incoming Class of 2029, Burrell is already making a measurable impact on Florida’s Space Coast. Since opening its doors in Melbourne less than a year ago, the College has quickly established itself as a vital part of the community—forming clinical partnerships, training future physicians, and engaging local leaders in its mission to improve healthcare access and education.
“These students bring a genuine passion for patient-centered care and a strong desire to make a difference in their communities,” said Dr. Doris Newman, Florida Campus Dean. “We’re dedicated to supporting them every step of the way as they develop the knowledge and skills to become outstanding osteopathic physicians.”
Incoming student Christian Morinvil said he felt confident choosing Burrell’s Florida campus. “I’m impressed by the College’s commitment to student success and the resources here,” he said. “It’s clear that Burrell College is dedicated to preparing us for the challenges and rewards of a career in medicine.”
The new class will join a growing campus with access to state-of-the-art facilities and a curriculum that blends clinical experience with hands-on learning. Those opportunities are made possible, in part, through partnerships with local healthcare systems designed to strengthen clinical education.
Burrell recently announced agreements with Health First and Parrish Healthcare, giving third- and fourth-year students access to training opportunities in hospitals and clinics across Brevard County. Through these partnerships, students work directly with practicing physicians in a variety of specialties, gaining real-world experience while serving the local community.
“Partnerships with local healthcare providers are essential to our mission,” said Burrell College President John Hummer. “They give our students the opportunity to sharpen their clinical skills, learn from experienced professionals, and build lasting connections within the medical community.”
Earlier this year, Burrell College hosted a welcome gala attended by more than 300 community leaders, elected officials, healthcare professionals and students. The event showcased the College’s simulation center, gross anatomy lab and osteopathic manipulative medicine lab while offering a chance to connect with faculty and students.
“This campus will help train the next generation of osteopathic physicians who will serve with excellence and compassion,” Hummer said.
Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey described Burrell’s arrival as a defining moment for the city. “The addition of Burrell College strengthens our reputation as a hub for innovation and education,” he said.
As Burrell College prepares to welcome its second Florida cohort, it continues to expand its role as a trusted partner in the region’s healthcare landscape. With new students arriving, partnerships growing, and community engagement deepening, the College is building a lasting legacy of care, education and service on the Space Coast.
