Preparedness Matters: Key Reminders for Hurricane Season

As the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins, local emergency experts and public health officials are urging residents to take preparedness seriously—before the next storm appears on the radar.

“This is the time to act, not wait,” said Dr. Lee Scheinbart, Chief Health Affairs Officer at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine and a FEMA-certified expert in disaster preparedness. “Things can change quickly once a storm is approaching.”

Dr. Scheinbart, a longtime Brevard County resident, recommends three immediate steps: monitor official  Burrell College communications, prepare a hurricane kit with essentials like food, water, and medications, and identify safe shelter options based on evacuation zones.

Burrell College will continue to issue updates and guidance throughout the season. Students, staff, faculty, and community members are encouraged to stay informed and ready.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.
