Burrell College Welcomes 300 New Student Doctors At 2025 White Coat Ceremonies in Florida and New Mexico

In two unforgettable ceremonies this July, Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine officially welcomed more than 300 future physicians to the osteopathic profession—each student taking their first step toward a career dedicated to service, science, and healing.

On Tuesday, July 16th, the celebration kicked off in Melbourne, Florida, where 100 new student doctors from Burrell’s Florida campus were honored at the Clemente Center at Florida Tech. Just days later, on Saturday, July 19th, the focus shifted to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where 200 incoming students gathered at Centennial High School for the college’s annual White Coat Ceremony.

Both events featured faculty-led coatings, student reflections, and the ceremonial reading of the Osteopathic Oath—a tradition that underscores the professionalism and compassion expected of every physician-in-training.

“This ceremony is a powerful symbol of our students’ journey into medicine,” said President John Hummer. “It affirms their commitment to serve their communities with integrity and heart—and it’s a moment their families and loved ones never forget.”

In Las Cruces, Dr. William Pieratt, Dean and Chief Academic Officer, addressed the incoming class:

“Each white coat placed on your shoulders today represents far more than a symbol. It’s a promise—to your future patients, to your peers, and to yourselves—that you are entering a profession built on service, humility, and lifelong learning. We’re honored to walk alongside you on this path.”

The Las Cruces ceremony also included special recognition of the GECU Foundation, one of this year’s official White Coat Experience sponsors, which awarded its prestigious inaugural THRIVE Scholarship to second-year student doctor Lavin Lahiji. The scholarship—totaling $242,000 over three academic years—represents an extraordinary investment in Burrell’s mission to support medical education and workforce development in underserved communities.

“We believe that when people have access to the essential healthcare they need, they’re able to live longer and have more fulfilling lives,” said Crystal Long, GECU Foundation Chairman. “It’s a privilege to collaborate with the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine and support them in their mission to keep physicians in the Borderland and in Southern New Mexico, promoting the overall health of those who live and work here.”

A formal check presentation will take place during the event to celebrate this generous commitment to student success and regional health equity.

Emmeline Garcia, GECU Foundation Executive Director, added, “Our focus is to remove barriers such as limited access to quality, affordable healthcare that impact the communities that we serve. That’s why we’re proud to contribute to a scholarship opportunity that will support a deserving student while helping our region increase access to a physician in the future.”

In Florida, the ceremony marked the second White Coat milestone for the newly launched campus in partnership with Florida Tech, which opened in 2024.

Dr. Doris Newman, Founding Dean of the Florida Campus, shared words of encouragement with the Melbourne class:

“Today is about you, our students—your passion, your potential, and your purpose. As one of the newest members of the Burrell College family, you’re not just starting medical school; you’re helping shape the legacy of this campus. Your white coat is a symbol of the trust your future patients will place in you, and we can’t wait to see the difference you’ll make.”

Together, the two ceremonies reflect Burrell’s expanding impact and united vision: to train a new generation of doctors committed to improving health outcomes in rural and medically underserved regions.
