Honoring Women in Medicine: Dr. Shannon Ingwersen’s Journey of Care and Education

September’s Women in Medicine Month shines a light on leaders shaping healthcare for the future—and Shannon Ingwersen, MD, FACOG, IBCLC, embodies that spirit.

As an assistant professor at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Florida campus, Dr. Ingwersen draws on years of experience in obstetrics, gynecology, and lactation medicine to train tomorrow’s physicians. She teaches clinical skills, diagnostic reasoning, and patient-centered care, while also facilitating courses in professionalism, ethics, and cultural humility.

Before joining Burrell College, Dr. Ingwersen provided full-spectrum OB/GYN care across Colorado, Florida, and Washington, earning recognition for her dedication to maternal health and patient advocacy. From mentoring medical students and midwives to launching initiatives in breastfeeding medicine, her career reflects a commitment to both cutting-edge education and compassionate care.

For Dr. Ingwersen, Women in Medicine Month is personal. “Women in Medicine Month reminds me how blessed I am to care for women at every stage of life, sharing in both their greatest joys and most challenging moments,” said Dr. Ingwerson. “It is an honor to do this work as both a woman and a mother, and now to carry it forward by helping educate the next generation of women in medicine.”

Whether in the clinic or the classroom, Dr. Ingwersen brings expertise, empathy, and leadership to the field of women’s health—paving the way for future physicians to do the same.
