(Las Cruces, NM) – The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine has once again been recognized on the national stage for its ongoing commitment to academic excellence, student success, and service to the healthcare profession. The College has received the 2025 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence and Distinction (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Academia magazine—marking the fourth consecutive year it has earned this prestigious distinction.

The HEED Award honors U.S. health profession schools and colleges that demonstrate exceptional achievement and innovation in health education, community engagement, and student development. Burrell College’s continued recognition underscores its mission to educate skilled and compassionate physicians who are dedicated to improving healthcare in the communities they serve.
“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition for the fourth year in a row,” said John Hummer, President of Burrell College. “This award reinforces our mission to provide quality healthcare in the underserved communities we are privileged to serve. It is also a reflection of the compassion, dedication, and collaboration that define our campus culture.”
William Pieratt, DO, FACP, Dean & Chief Academic Officer and Executive Vice President of Academic Services, emphasized that the award reflects the College’s focus on academic quality and professional preparedness. “This recognition reflects our entire College’s shared commitment to excellence,” Dr. Pieratt said. “Our focus remains on preparing future physicians who reflect the communities they serve and who are equipped to provide culturally competent, compassionate care.”
The College’s approach integrates rigorous academic preparation with meaningful community involvement and a student-centered philosophy. Through its programs, outreach, and partnerships, Burrell continues to strengthen the bridge between medical education and real-world healthcare needs across its mission region.
As a 2025 recipient, the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine will be featured in the November/December 2025 issue of INSIGHT Into Academia magazine, recognizing its sustained record of achievement in higher education.
