A new national analysis shows how colleges of osteopathic medicine, including Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, are improving healthcare access, supporting local economies and reinforcing communities across the U.S.
The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) just released their 2025 Osteopathic Medical Education (OME) Impact Report, it examines how COMs contribute through education, workforce development and economic activity, while addressing physician shortages nationwide.

“Across America, communities are facing the harsh realities of the national physician shortage and an overstretched healthcare system. This report demonstrates OME’s vital role in shaping a healthier future for all,” said AACOM President and CEO Robert A. Cain, DO. “Our schools are training physicians who serve where they’re needed most and fueling local economies along the way. Together, we’re shaping competent, compassionate doctors who make a real difference every day.”
John Hummer, President of Burrell College, said the report reflects the College’s mission.
“These findings highlight the critical work our faculty and students do every day. By training physicians who serve in rural and underserved areas, Burrell College is helping ensure communities have access to quality healthcare while also contributing to local economic growth,” said President Hummer.
Key findings from the report include:
- $6.2 billion in economic output generated
- $3.3 billion in GDP supported nationwide
- $2.4 billion in labor income supported, including $1.3 billion in direct wages and benefits
- More than 38,000 jobs supported, with over 20,000 created directly
- 56% of COM alumni practice in primary care, 25% in related specialties
- 12% of graduates serve in rural areas, 16% in Medically Underserved Areas
- Some colleges report up to 43% of graduates in rural areas and 39% in underserved regions
Locally, Burrell College’s impact continues to grow. In 2024, the College generated regional economic activity through $20 million in direct payroll, $19 million in mission region spending and $4.6 million in New Mexico state vendor spending. Since its inception, Burrell College has added $46.9 million in construction spending. These investments create jobs, drive operational growth, strengthen the local health care workforce and support the well-being of families, businesses and communities across the region.

The report underscores that COMs are uniquely positioned to train physicians who remain committed to the communities that need them most.
“These numbers tell a powerful story,” Cain said. “Every new COM, every graduating class and every new physician represents healthier patients, stronger communities and real hope for the future of healthcare.”
