Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine announced that alumnus Harris Ahmed, DO, MPH, will serve as the keynote speaker for the college’s 2026 commencement ceremony.

Dr. Ahmed, a member of Burrell’s inaugural Class of 2020, currently serves as a vitreoretinal surgery fellow at Weill Cornell Medicine. He also holds leadership roles in national medical organizations and has built a reputation for his work in health policy and public health advocacy.

“Returning to Burrell to speak at commencement is a tremendous honor,” Dr. Ahmed said. “This institution helped shape my path in medicine and reinforced the responsibility physicians have to advocate for their patients and their communities. I look forward to celebrating the Class of 2026 and encouraging them to lead with purpose as they begin their careers.”

Dr. Ahmed has authored numerous publications and delivered lectures focused on physician workforce issues, scope of practice, and medical education. He also serves on the board of trustees for the California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.

John Hummer, President of Burrell College, said Dr. Ahmed represents the mission and vision of the institution.

“Dr. Ahmed exemplifies the leadership, service, and commitment to patient care that we strive to instill in every Burrell graduate,” President Hummer said. “His accomplishments in clinical medicine, policy, and advocacy reflect the impact our alumni can have on the future of health care. We are proud to welcome him back to address the Class of 2026.”

Dr. Ahmed’s keynote also carries special significance. His graduating class in 2020 could not participate in a traditional ceremony because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, graduates took part in a drive-through diploma celebration during a period of social distancing.

The 2026 ceremony will mark Dr. Ahmed’s first time attending a Burrell commencement inside the Pan American Center.

“As someone whose own graduation looked very different, it means a great deal to return and celebrate this milestone in person,” Dr. Ahmed said. “Commencement marks the beginning of a physician’s lifelong commitment to learning, service, and improving the health of our communities.”
