BCOM Student is One of Four Selected to Speak at Conference

BCOM third year student Harris Ahmed attended a conference hosted by the American Osteopathic Colleges of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AOCOO-HN) in Detroit, Michigan where he was one of only four students throughout the country selected to present his research. His research, entitled “Alleviating Eye Care Disparities in Rural Communities,” was inspired by his work with Humanity First in Guatemala and his experiences in New Mexico.

Ahmed said, “Rural patients see ophthalmologists less, get less vision screenings and preventive visits, have to travel more to see a provider, and have overall worse outcomes across the board as compared to patients in urban communities. My dream is to serve in an underserved/community setting as an eye surgeon.”

Ahmed pointed out that the AOCOO-HNS offers free membership to students and can be joined online at aocoohns.org. BCOM students are at a unique advantage as the AOOCOO-HNS headquarters are based out of Santa Fe.

Ahmed’s work on another subject he is passionate about, diversity in medicine, was recently published in the New Mexico State University Library Archives. Read about it at: bcomnm.org/blog/2018/08/14/faculty-member-students-have-work-published
