Burrell College Expert Tips From Your Student Doc: Foundations of Good Health

Student Doctor Shares Tips on How to be healthier

Welcome to “Expert Tips From Your Student Doc,” a segment where Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine student doctors share important medical information. Staying healthy is a lifelong commitment, but with a few foundational practices, you can set yourself up for success. Here are some key health tips to keep your mind and body thriving.

Tip #1: Balanced Diet
A balanced diet is the cornerstone of good health. It fuels your body and provides essential nutrients. Aim to include a variety of food groups in your daily meals: vegetables, fruits, proteins, grains, and dairy (or dairy alternatives). Eating a range of foods will help ensure you get the vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients you need to stay energized and strong.

Tip #2: Exercise
Exercise, along with a well-balanced diet, is a powerful tool for maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of many diseases. The American Heart Association recommends engaging in 30 to 45 minutes of moderate activity at least five days per week. This can be as simple as walking, jogging, dancing, or even playing a sport you enjoy. Find activities you love and keep moving – it’s one of the best ways to support your heart, lungs, and muscles.

Tip #3: Rest
Getting adequate sleep is essential for mental and physical health. A good night’s rest allows your brain to process information, restore energy, and prepare for the day ahead. Most adults need around 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night to perform at their best. If sleep has been difficult, try establishing a bedtime routine with relaxing activities to encourage your body to wind down and rest.

Tip #4: Yearly Check-ups
Don’t skip those yearly check-ups with your healthcare provider. Regular wellness visits help catch potential issues early on, giving you a better chance at effective treatment and prevention. This includes visits for women’s wellness, mammograms, prostate exams, and other preventive screenings specific to your health needs. Keeping up with these appointments ensures everything is working as it should.
