The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) recently awarded student physician Anamaria Ancheta the “Be Their First” Scholarship. This award recognizes medical students who demonstrate strong promise as future leaders in family medicine.
Student physician Ancheta also received a travel award to attend the AAFP National Conference for Medical Students and Residents, scheduled for July 31 through August 2 in Kansas City, MO. She will present her research poster, titled: “Beyond the Needle: Utilizing Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment as an Alternative to Glucocorticoid Injection for Treatment of Adhesive Capsulitis in Patients with Diabetes.”
The conference organizers selected her work as one of just 50 posters to showcase at this prestigious national event, which attracts thousands of students, residents, and physicians every year.
“It truly is an honor to receive this award,” said student physician Ancheta. “The AAFP has played a huge role in helping me grow—from my start as the community outreach officer for our Family Medicine Interest Group here at Burrell to my current role as third-year regional academic representative.”
She actively participates in the New Mexico AAFP chapter, presenting at the NMAFP Annual Medical Student Reception, interviewing family physicians around the state, and collaborating with the New Mexico Primary Care Training Consortium.
“Burrell’s partnerships with local family medicine doctors and the Doña Ana County Medical Society have opened my eyes to all the different paths a family physician can take—from sports medicine and advocacy to advanced obstetric care,” she said.
Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine proudly recognizes student physician Ancheta’s achievements and her commitment to the future of family medicine. For more information, see the full article, watch the video, and explore the Faces of Family Medicine series.
