Newman/Allen Family Scholarship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine

Purpose

Newman/Allen Family Scholarship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) supports Burrell College students who demonstrate excellence in OMM. The intention is to honor 2- second-year students who have excelled in OMM and have an affinity for this expertise within Osteopathic Medicine, one student from each campus in Melbourne, FL and Las Cruces, NM.

The Newman/Allen Family Scholarship is supported by Doris Newman, DO, FAAO, Campus Dean at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, Melbourne, FL, and Past-President of the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) (2015-16), and her spouse, Sam Allen and will be awarded every year. The Newman / Allen Family is supportive of the aim to enhance the lives of patients through OMM and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) as they themselves have experienced over the years.

Eligibility CriteriaMust be deemed in good standing academically as determined by the medical school
Additional Award Considerations

Enrolled full time as a second year DO student at the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Students must be deemed in good standing academically as determined by the medical school as guided by the student handbook.

Recommended: Participates as a member in the Student American Academy of Osteopathy (SAAO).

Additional course work in OMM/OMT outside of Burrell curriculum, recommended (such as AAO-American Academy of Osteopathy, OCA – Osteopathic Cranial Academy, FAO – Florida Academy of Osteopathy, SCTF – Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation, ASSSG – A Still Sutherland Study Group courses)

Write a one-page thesis to address the importance of OMM/OMT in patient care.
One letter of recommendation (preferably by an osteopathic physician).

Required SubmissionsProvide a list and background information on any community, charitable or volunteer service organizations and/or projects conducted since their freshman year in college to present
