Scholarship and Loan Programs

There are many scholarship programs throughout the United States that support medical education. In addition, there exists today a strong private medical school loan market from such institutions as iHELP, Wells Fargo, and Sallie Mae. Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine will offer scholarships and a comprehensive list of organizations that provide financial assistance to students. Military Health Profession Scholarships and GI Bill® Benefits, may be available for qualified students. Students may also apply for one of the loan forgiveness programs offered through a variety of government and non-profit agencies.

Armed Forces Scholarship Programs

There are military scholarships available to medical school students through the Armed Forces. National Health Services Corps (NHSC)

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is a program of the Federal Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Primary Health Care, which assists communities in providing primary health care to underserved and vulnerable populations. NM Medical Loan-for-Service

The purpose of the New Mexico Medical Loan-For-Service is to increase the number of physicians in the State of New Mexico which have experienced shortages of health professionals by making educational loans to students entering medical school. https://hed.state.nm.us/financial-aid/loan-service-programs/medical

Sallie Mae: A Sallie Mae website which lists numerous private scholarships, grants, tuition waivers, internships and fellowships.

The BEST COLLEGES: College Affordability for Minority Students: Scholarships, Grants, & More…College affordability is a matter in question for the majority of college students of all races and ethnicities. For many applicants, scholarships can help to offset education costs and may even supplement other forms of financial aid. Minority scholarships, in particular, can help level the playing field for minority groups underrepresented in U.S. colleges and universities.

AACOM Sherry R. Arnstein Minority Student Scholarship: AACOM recognizes one newly accepted and one continuing underrepresented minority student at AACOM’s member colleges of osteopathic medicine.

American Indian Graduate Center is a national organization headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico providing educational assistance to American Indian and Alaska Native graduate and undergraduate students throughout the United States. American Association of University Women: Women in medicine who are ethnic minorities may apply for funding.

American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians: The ACOFP offers several scholarships for students enrolled in a college of osteopathic medicine. American Indian Graduate Center: The Gerald Peet Fellowship gives priority to medical school students.

American Medical Women’s Association: AMWA offers travel awards, grants and tuition need-based scholarships.

American Osteopathic Foundation: The AOF offers a variety of grant, scholarship, and award opportunities to osteopathic medical students, residents, physicians, researchers, and osteopathic centers/programs.

Buckfire & Buckfire Medical School Diversity Scholarship: The Medical School Diversity Scholarship is $2,000.00 and will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in an accredited medical school, who is either a member of an ethnic or racial minority or demonstrates commitment to issues of diversity within their academic career.

Christian Medical and Dental Associations: Scholarships are available to assist with the tuition of medical students who are committed to a career in foreign or domestic medical missions.

Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship: Up to $30,000 of benefits for training in high-demand field of medicine, for those receiving Chapter 33 educational benefits. National Association of Medical Minority Educators: NAMME is a national organization working to ensure racial and ethnic diversity in all of the health professions.

National Medical Fellowship: The NMF’s mission is to provide scholarships for underrepresented minorities in medicine. NMF programs fund need-based and merit scholarships during the first years of medical study and experience-based opportunities for more senior students.

Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans: The purpose of the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. Candidates must demonstrate the relevance of graduate education to their long-term career goals and potential in enhancing their contributions to society.

Student Osteopathic Medical Association: SOMA lists several scholarships available for osteopathic medical students.

Additionally, numerous states and local communities offer scholarship programs for accepted or enrolled medical students. Generally, these are awarded based on the individual applicant, and not on a medical schools’ for-profit status.
